Has anyone managed to insert data in a remote DB2 database on a IBM iSeries (AS/400), from a WMQI broker running on a Unix server ?

I guess in theory it should be possible, but wondered if there were any pitfalls I should try and avoid !

Regards,
Nick.

Nick,

Concerning your question about WMQI on AIX accessing DB2 on iSeries:

This has been done, from both AIX as well as Windows 2k.

There are some very specific things that must be done, software levels that must be met and so on.

To summarize:

1. You must have DB2 V7.2 FixPack 7 (or 8, but at least 7) on the machine with the WMQI broker.

2. If you intend on using any of the new support for external procedures in WMQI, then you must be running WMQI 2.1 CSD4. Otherwise, at least CSD2... but nothing older.

3. You must have established connectivity between the broker's machine and the iSeries for use by DB2 Connect... which also must be installed. I know how to do that from Windows, but not AIX - the customer did that themselves.

4. The userid and password used by the broker must be authorized to access the DB2 facility on the iSeries... and that database must be recoverable.

5. The OS/400 operating system and the DB2 component should be at fairly current levels of code, at least within 12 months.

6. The database should be using a standard CCSID, ie one that WMQI will recognize.

If you cannot meet all of the above, then it will not function. Anyone one of these is a show stopper.

Good Luck

Bill,

Many thanks, it's good to know that it has been done before.

We can put ticks in the boxes against 1,2,5 and 6, which just leaves 3 and 4 to concentrate on.

Regards,
Nick.

Since I don't know enough about your application, and any iSeries database tables which pre-exist, to know if this is possible or appropriate but you may find it easier if the database tables can be created in a schema (an OS/400 'collection' in this context) which match the name of the database access userid used by the broker. With a server login id of the same name and password owning the schema/collection you should have the required privileges - the only other thing I can think of to ensure would be that the server userid needs *CHANGE authority on the NULLID COLLECTION (to be able to execute the CLI and other packages bound in from ddcs400.lst).

When I did my testing some time back (I had to apply efixes to DB2 and DB2 Connect), I was given access to a sample databse but could not have my own schema name, so I just built a broker with userid and password to match.

Cheers
Bill

ps. We have tried to "educate" folks and get the support pages updated, but this configuration is not mentioned in the official list of databases - but there was specific code added to WMQI CSD2 to allow this access.

The formal support statement for WMQI access of user databases on iSeries servers is now on the web site:
Windows, for example, is at http://www-3.ibm.com/software/ts/mqseries/platforms/supported/wsmq_integ_for_nt2000_2_1.html - see the comments below the main table.

These comments include:

Support for access of user databases on iSeries servers
Pre req levels
WMQI: v2.1 CSD 04
Connectivity by DB2 Connect : DB2 v7.2 FixPak 7
Connectivity by Client Access Express : V5R1M0 with
PTF SI05361 or V5R2 SI05854
OS/400 V5R1 with PTFs SI03013 and SI04047 or V5R2 (no PTFs)
Restrictions
Large database Objects (LOBs) are not supported.
The broker database may not reside on the iSeries server.
Globally coordinated ('XA') transactions are not supported.
Database stored procedures on the iSeries may be called when using DB2 Connect
but not with Client Access.
New Era of Networks nodes may not access the iSeries databases.
