I get what you are looking for, but what you are looking for (from a collection point of view) is not on my agenda, I try to use as much other sources as I can, using the path of least resistance or installation effort.

This would be the easiest way to collect information. Installing Java programs on each QM is actually quite labourious. I would much prefer a single windows executable (whether or not it contains an embedded JVM) that gathers all its information by connecting to the queue managers via client channels. You could give it the first QM connection details and it could crawl the rest (and/or read a CCDT file etc).

Sort of like a super version of MQ explorer or MO71. I have looked at MQDocument but find it inconvenient to use (too much XML knowledge and Java setup needed). Perhaps I am spoiled by the modern age of GUIs and Iphone etc but it needs to be really quick and easy. Time is short and attention spans limited. If it takes more than 15 mins to setup (for someone with limited Unix skills) then I tend not to use it.

interesting comment... I admit knowing the programs inside out does not qualify me as a simple user, however MQDocument can be used with practically zero installation time: unzip, run on any platform or can even be used without installing any software on any platform MQ is on! Have you also read: WebSphere MQ environments - Documentation and Auditing ?

The XML / Java setup you refer to maybe in relation to the trial version as it contains the compiled stylesheets for the reporting???

It's really a simple requirement conceptually...

I got quite a chuckle from this.

It reminded me of the time my CIO wanted (demanded) a complete inventory of all 2500 corporate PCs, and all hardware and software installed on them. (This was before Intel and other vendors had written this type of software.) He wanted it by the end of the week.

I told him that we'd work on it. The CIO's response was "Seems simple enough ... how hard can it be?"
