We have some old mq(v5.3) which need to be migrated to MQ v7. While going through the quick beginnign guide on different platformsm I have some confusion on Windows and Linux. For Aix and Solaris the doc cleary says, that we must unisntall the previous version before instalilng new version but in Linux and windwos, it says, mq 7 can not coexist so must migrate.
Aix
If you are migrating from WebSphere MQ Version 5.3 to WebSphere MQ Version 7.0, you must uninstall WebSphere MQ Version 5.3.
Linux
WebSphere MQ Version 7.0 does not coexist with previous versions of WebSphere MQ. You must migrate from either WebSphere MQ Version 5.3 or WebSphere MQ Version 6.0 to WebSphere MQ Version 7.0.
Windows:
WebSphere MQ Version 7.0 does not coexist with previous versions of WebSphere MQ. You must migrate from either WebSphere MQ Version 5.3 or WebSphere MQ Version 6.0 to WebSphere MQ Version 7.0.
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv7/v7r0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.mq.csqzao.doc/mi10120_.htm
Furthemore, the docs says, "If you are migrating from WebSphere Version 5.3 to Version 7.0, WebSphere MQ Explorer is installed by default" does not this mean, we do not need to uninstall 5.3 before installing v7.x?
Thanks

Yes, or no, depending on what the question is really asking.
Midrange WMQ versions don't coexist well. For cleanliness purposes, I'm a proponent of the "out with the old, in with the new" school of upgrading. Uninstall the old version, install the new version.
The URL you cited is pretty clear on WMQ co-existence:
Coexistence
For the purposes of this section, coexistence is defined as the ability of two or more different versions of WebSphere MQ to function on the same computer.
Two or more different versions of WebSphere MQ cannot coexist on the same computer, except for WebSphere MQ for z/OS® where multiple different versions can coexist in a limited number of scenarios.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Of course, some clarification is in order:
"...the same computer..." means the same instance of the o/s. So, if you are LPARing, you have multiple o/s's. Each o/s can have another (or the same) WMQ version. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

my quesiton is, in case of Aix and Solaris, it says, uninstall and inistall but in case of linux and windows, it says migrate. what is the difference between these two wording? |

It's pretty clear to me as it's Windows you're doing - follow the standard for Windows of uninstall old version, reboot, install new version.
Have you tried trying to install V7.0 straight over the top of V5.3, i.e. test whether it can be done? _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

Not yet. In fact, I am preparing documentation so I need to be clear before I start. |
