The Webspere MQ version 6 and version 7 manuals have the following restriction for installing the server on Solaris:

The /var/mqm and /var/mqm/log directories must be on a local file system.

Is someone aware of any issues with having /var/mqm and /var/mqm/log mounted to NFS? Specifically, is MQ doing any type of file locking to some of the files on these directories that could run into issues if either of those 2 directories are mounted to NFS?

The Solaris Quick Beginnings Guide is rather explicit on this point.

Thanks Peter for the quick reply! Would you know though any of the specifics of why that restriction was stated? Is it more of a best practice type of thing, or are there potential/known issues you can run into by mounting the /var/mqm and /var/mqm/log directories to NFS?

Go a bit further back in the InfoCenter to see what WMQ does with the filesystem, and how it delineates between system and user portions of the filesystem.

Your post is asking "exactly why did IBM do this?" and "can I safely violate this?" I doubt IBM will give you an explicit answer to the former. As to the latter, there are WMQ system portions of the filesysem that WMQ software must maintain absolute ownership without conflict. This is the same as with an o/s, where portions must be where the vendor requires. Doing otherwise will lead to corruption, unpredictable results, or (my favorite) failure.

If the documentation says "don't do it", then it's not best practice but a requirement.

If you violate this and then hit any problems of any kind later, then any attempt to obtain support from IBM is likely to be met with "sorry, you're running an unsupported configuration".
