We are running MQ 6.0.2.5 for Windows on Windows 2003 servers. Does anyone know or have any experience with changing the server's name/IP address and how that affects a QM which is running on it? These servers are part of Active Directory.

I have looked in the registry and found 4 keys which contain the server name:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\MQSeries\CurrentVersion\Configuration\DefaultConfiguration\V2_MachineConnName

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\MQSeries\CurrentVersion\Configuration\DefaultConfiguration\V2_MachineName

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\MQSeries\CurrentVersion\Configuration\DefaultConfiguration\V2_MQDAIQMName

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\MQSeries\CurrentVersion\Configuration\DefaultConfiguration\V2_MQQMName

I had one of our server guys do this in our development environment and MQ seems to come up with no problem, all channels start/stop properly and I can browse queues, PUT/GET with no problem. I just wonder about the "down the road" effects and whether IBM will say, "you shouldn't have done this" if I have to call them with a Production issue.

I feel pretty confident that changing the IP address won't cause any problems, provided DNS is properly updated, etc... But changing the host name worries me, especially seeing that it is buried in the Registry.

You should have no problems. The qmgr does not know ip addresses and ports.

MQ sender channel definitions ascribe an ip address and port. The listener object (or control program) at the receiving end passes inbound messages to the qmgr.

Phil,

Changing the IP address happens all the time, so if everybody used the fully qualified DNS name and port number, you should be OK.

Now, the the DNS name changed, then you might want the old name out there as an alias in DNS while people switch.

So, if you have more then one QMGR on a single machine, you might want to use a unique Vitual IP and DNS name with each one. That way, if you should have to move that machine, the other end would not need to change. Say, if you were splitting the QMGRs up to individual machines.

So, you should be fine doing that.
