Some regulars don't like it when an "old" thread is replied to. Why? If the thread is relative to the new posters query or comment, who cares if the last post in it was 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, or 1 year ago? Its all the same, right? _________________ Peter Potkay

Because we're old & cranky? Because seeing old threads reminds us of better days of our youth?
My personal objection is that in many cases the thread is a different version of the software and so the problem is not the same. You see this with the "I found this thread, followed the advice but still have the problem" kind of reopening.
What I encourage is to start a new thread with a link to the old one. This gives you the head start of describing the problem, demonstrates to us cranky old timers that you've already searched the forum and attempted to resolve the issue and highlights one or more suggestions we needn't bother making because they've already failed! _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

I don't have a problem with threads a few months old at most, but when they are years old I think it easier for a new thread to be started and the old one to be referred to, especially if the old one is a long thread. It might just be me, but I tend to overlook re-opened 'old' threads because I don't always have the time to read back through them to see if the 'new' poster's question has already been answered, or is relevant, or whether the old thread was never 'closed' with an answer. That last reason is the only one (as far as I am concerned) that justifies adding to an old thread, because a new poster should have found the answer within a thread, and the answer wasn't there.
That said, I have also been guilty of answering an old thread because I was in a hurry and didn't check the date of the previous post I was answering! _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

Heh, I love it when the thread is years old, and the new posters software IS the same version as the old thread!!! _________________ Peter Potkay
