Hi,
Has anyone used a client connection to WMQ server over a long distance, possibly across continents? If yes, how reliable has it been?
I know network glitches can occur any time. However, I am looking for general experiences.
Thanks and regards |

Hi,
IBM recommends only using client connections over a LAN and not a WAN.

The reliability of an MQ client connection is strictly tied to the reliability of the network link it is running over. |

It depends on the WAN, I've used them extensively within a corporate network which had decent bandwidth over the WAN links and they work fine.
Recently set up a MQ client in North America connecting to a UK based queue manager without problems.
I think the "avoid WANs" advice is probably out of date with many modern networks. |

But not all. Despite the advances in technology, there have been few advances in network budget. And WANs have many more components in which well meaning network people can make one trivial change "which couldn't possibly have any impact". _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

The sites where I have worked have had a lot of investment in networks.
Links between remote locations of multi-megabit bandwidth are now common, whereas in the early days they might be struggling on 64 kb.
Links between major corporate locations are usually very good, links to small locations such as branches may not be so good.
TCP/IP was originally a WAN protocol so it copes fairly well.
However, as always, it is a good idea to make sure the client application responds appropriately to MQRC 2009 conditions (these can occur on LANs as well).
Ideally it should re-acquire the connection, retrying the MQCONN at a reasonable interval without manual intervention.
The WMQ v7 client has the ability to reconnect automatically, making it even more suitable for WAN usage. |

You've been lucky.

You'd be amazed how many places who could afford better are making do with 2Mb

It's the single thing most often missed by app people.

But am I correct in saying it's only true if the queue manager is at v7 as well? _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Yes, needs WMQ v7 at both ends. |
