I installed the Windows MQ 7 client (from mqc7 supportpac) on a Windows XP Professional SP3 desktop. I have made attempts from this desktop to connect to a QM on a Windows 2003 server running MQ 5.3. The client applications are M071 (MQMON) and MA01 (Q.exe).
When the connection attempt is made on a SVRCONN (MQMON_SVRCONN) the result is the same for both Q.exe and MQMON - 2540 Unknown Channel Name. This channel was just created via MQExplorer on the Windows server.
When the connection attempt is made on a SVRCONN (SYSTEM.DEF.SVRCONN) both programs get the same error - RC(2035) -Not Authorized. The client applications are running under a userID which is in the Administrators group.
Is it the case that I must match my MQ Client version to the MQ Version of the MQ Server? (I looked but could not find any documentation on this requirement)

Obviously the new v7 client features don't work if both ends are not at v7 but that's not the problem you're describing.
Treat as a 2035; I suspect the version is a red herring (though it's possible v7 has tightened up some checking).
And of course you should move off v5.3 server because it's out of support. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.
