Can anyone please let me know whether WMQ (5.3) supports Outbound Synchronous interfaces from Mainframe. The current version of MQ available FOR OS/390 V5.3.1. The requirement is :

Legacy system wil send SOAP messages via some IMS process which will trigger some external Webservice. The process will wait till response is received from the Webservice.

Please can someone share me the link of relevant resources, if this is possible.

Please let me know in case you need any other information.

This is perfectly within the capabilties of that level. There's some setting up to do, and some things your design will need to consider (external Webservice being down for example) but this is effectively WMQ 101.

If you mean "will WMQ invoke the webservice for us" then no version of WMQ does that. On mainframe or elsewhere.

Thanks. Understand your point. In that case we need to have some ESB (eg Tibco, WMB) or compatible App Server like WAS, which in turn can invoke the WS once SOAP request is received via MQ.

IMS applications cannot wait for a reply. The entire IMS region will hang. Totally unscaleable.

IMS is a server side design, not a client side.

You can send a request message out and have the reply message initiate a new transaction.

If memory serves, IMS supports both commit-then-send (synchronous) or send-then-commit (asynchronous) app behaviors.
