I found this question on IBM MQWF sample test (http://www-1.ibm.com/certify/tests/sam092.shtml) and their answer to this is interesting.
Quote:
What is the result of using a three-tier configuration instead of a sufficient two-tier configuration?
A) The maximum achievable workflow throughput will increase.
B) The maximum achievable workflow throughput will decrease.
c) The maximum achievable workflow throughput will be the same.
d) A Three tier configuration is not possible.
I found the answer as (a) on the site, but I feel it should be (b). Because the question says 'sufficient 2-tier configuration'. Or may be it is not so simple to answer this question, with out the hardware specifics.
It is a fact that with a single system in a 3-tier setup the throughput might decrease because of the network overhead. This is also discussed in 'MQWF Performance Estimation' doc (I dont remember the support pac ID).
