So... if I understand what you are saying correctly...

You don't have mailx installed, but you want to use it.

Have you considered installing mailx?

edit:

I'm sure mr google would be helpful in locating an appropriate rpm for your distribution that you could then install. And being CentOS you could probably use the yum package manager to install it without even using google (assuming it is in one of the standard repositories)
