That's just an option till Scubie is busy while identifying the Culprit Process(s).

But expanding the filesystem for an errant application only reduces the apparent impact of the problem, and thereby reducing the priority of its resolution. In doing so, the problem shifts from the application developer to IT infrastructure folks (for not having enough filesystem space to accomodate errant applications).

Reducing filesystem size will cause the application to fail much quicker, thus elevating the priority of the problem - to its originator - the application developer.

Odd, isn't it.

If the problem still persist in the system and temporary solution has been taken as a permanent solution and there is no follow up of that problem.

So, back to problem-determination:

I'd take a frequent look at current queue depth. Look for queues that have lots of messages over a long period of time.

Look also for maxdepth that set unusually high (like 999999999) - some number that doesn't seem to make business sense. In a typical request-reply scenario, queues should have few, if any, messages.

Thanks for all the comments guys, I am still monitoring the situation to try and determine the root cause of the problem (which is normally money and women but thats a different discussion!).

I like the idea of decreasing the log size...how does one do that? Shut down, change and delete current logs and start up?

Carlo

...and probably the nature of the messages i.e. persistence or non persistence.
