The original post seems to me to be looking for a fast-path to knowledge. "If I read the really good posts, I can skip the others." |
It definitely sounded like that. didnt it ?
As you said, there are so many pearls of wisdom, but buried under a vast heap of posts.
Should I really read all those posts before I reach the post which I am really looking for ? Well, it heavily depends on so many factors - like relevancy, quality, time factor, legibility.
Take the example which I've mentioned in my first post
If I search the forum using keywords like "java security", "default user", "no user", "mq default security" the chance of getting the right post is very small (one reason is, the posts are not tagged with any keywords). In this example the word "anonymous" does the magic, just because the asker had used it many times. Does the word have any direct relation to the post ? I am not sure.
I bet while you were in that discussion (I've noticed that you had an "aha" moment in that post ), you knew that it is one of those pearls. I am just really asking that you move/copy that kind of post into a separate section.

I'm pretty certain that there is no fast-path; and that reading more posts |
I am not sure how or why reading posts helps in gaining actual theoretical knowledge. Many a time, (at least for the beginners) it gives pointers and concepts from your own experiences, which we take back to the Manual. I really want to see if anyone can build a cluster of production ready MQs just by reading posts here. Of course there might be somebody like that, but for me it takes much less time if I read the Manual.
and no, I am not giving any certification exams some time soon !!! _________________ "I almost care !" |

Sounds like a good idea to me. Might be worth including some "HOWTO" posts. I posted one recently that had a good example of how to use the PCF Java API that was included in MQ7.
If we encourage people to write posts with a title of "HOWTO: something" in an area they feel could do with a howto and/or they are an expert, those would be prime candidates for moving to a special forum section.
At very least it would give a central section to point people at, maybe we just need more info in the FAQ forum? _________________ Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. |

True. But, as an example, go to Google and key in 'posts are not tagged with any keywords' and this very post will be near the top of the searches returned.
What I'm suggesting is that Google is the kind of search engine that mqseries.net is not.

Most of the important how-to's are in the relevant manuals. Quick Beginnings says how-to create a qmgr; the WMQ Clusters manual describes in detail, and with MQSC scripts, how to set up a cluster. The WMQ Intercomm manual has how-to set up channels between qmgrs.
This explains why the more experienced sysadmins suggest that you read the manuals first, try things second, post third. Yes, it will take some time; but the manual is the bible (small b) learning the basics. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

Another forum that won't be seen by the noodniks that never search for anything in the first place.
Copies of posts will double the valid search results for the people that do search
I vote for a new forum.
A feature that would allow people to vote on existing posts would be nice though. I would like to search for all posts that rate 5 stars by 10 or more people. Or if I search for a solution and find an older thread that is highly rated, I would feel better about following its advice. If it saves my bacon in Production, I'll rate it 5 stars too!
Then we start seeing whose posts are worth 5 stars, and whose posts are zero stars most of the time. _________________ Peter Potkay

This sounds like a great idea.
I just wander how many people other than maybe the OP would bother to rate the posts?
Can I have a star please? |

The who in whose would be the person that originally posted? Or subsequent responders?
I could do without a rating system whose metric is popularity. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

I don't know how much the technology allows us with the rating of posts / voting question. But I've asked.
I think rather than a popularity contest what we're looking for is some means (stars? Useful/Not useful?) of identifying posts which people have found useful. These posts can then be placed by the moderators in the FAQ section (possibly renamed) if we agree they're useful.
This would screen out posts which are pants, but where the poster has a large circle of friends. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

I think the responders. If so inclined I would rate the answer. No need to rate the question. You could if it was a really good question, properly asked and all that.

I suppose you could restrict the votes to only registered users and prevent anyone from rating their own posts. If a post is very helpful, I suppose that makes it popular, in which case I would like to be able to search for it. Post with a single 5 start rating? Big deal, I don't care. Posts with 20 or 30 4 or 5 star ratings? That's probably a worthwhile post. And popular too. _________________ Peter Potkay

One way would be for people to nominate posts, and for three mods to agree the merit of a post, at which time it could be moved into the 'Hollywood Stars' forum - just my tuppeny worth... _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

I think we're certainly looking for only registered people to be involved here.
IMHO we're trying to identify useful threads rather than posts. So even if the original question is dumb, it might be valuable if it leads to a profitable discussion. Or useful information.
That's my opinion. I'm interested in other peoples. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Pants? |
Euphemism for poor, bad etc.
UK English = underwear (undershorts)
US English = trousers _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

I don't think there are any losers with so much time that all they do is 5 star any and all posts by a particular user.
This probably doesn't even exist as a technology on this board though.
Bottom line I want to avoid a new forum with duplicate posts. _________________ Peter Potkay
