Hi moderators,

We have had many many useful discussions in this forum, is it possible to bump them into a special place, like Best Of <Something> ??

Is it too much to ask ? It will be a real boon for starters.

For example, this post here has saved me twice today from posting an already answered question.

anilit99 - I'm not sure what you are asking for. are you asking for new or different categories of posts? Or posts categorized by subject content?

Can you give some examples, please.

If I got that right, anilit99's suggestion is to create repository where all posts which have detail insight about how things work or why or why not should be placed.
As an example the thread given by anilit99 or the one which had discussion about message expiry and scavenger process, etc. can be stored as a knowledge base.

Bruce,
we have separate categories for java and jms, challenge forum and clustering, mainframe and CICS. Similarly a category which says Best Of xxxxx.

Nobody would be able to post anything in here, just moderators should be able to move (copy) good posts like the one I mentioned below into this category.

Obviously you guys can tell what a good post is (the depth of the discussion and many other factors).

You nailed it on the head, Sumit.

Stating the obvious here, no body wants to read the manual

One of the many reasons is its just not interactive. I mean its a single person discussion. It creates a much more impact if two people are talking and a third person is listening to the discussion. It makes it more interesting.

Obviously you guys would be talking in your level of expertise, which is also good for us. We go back to the manual to understand terms like SID, OAM, MCA likewise.

Do you mean Best Of Mainframe and CICS? Something like that?

True. What qualities do you believe make a good post?

For me, a good post is one that gives me an Aha! moment - something that, all of a sudden, makes sense in the bigger scheme of things; or one that clears up some residual confusion; or one that is simple, yet elegant. A good haiku helps.

Yup, exactly !
If you think making a separate category for each one of them, then we can broadly divide them as :

1. Best of Programming.
2. Best of Administration.
3. Best of Best Practices (!)

Yup, the AHA moment is always the best

for me any healthy discussion always gives some new information and that is always good !

A number of support sites solicit (via radio buttons) the perceived (subjective) value of a post to the readers. We've chatted about doing something like this here.

Best of is subjective - qualitative, not quantitative. How to apply qualitative value is difficult. It's like humor; what makes you laugh, I might not find funny at all.

Here's a random thought: If each post asked for a numeric weight (0 for no value, through 100 for absolute value), perhaps an ongoing average or aggregate value help some readers decide whether to stop and visit.

Another random thought: A method of nominating a post as deserving of note or deserving of disdain. There are emoticons at the left that do that.

Speaking as a moderator I'm game!

2 questions occur to me immediately:

- How do we determine a qualifying post? Public endorsement? Some kind of voting system?
- How do we get people to review these posts before asking questions? Does that matter if we can refer to the sections?

I'd like to underline that this post is devoid of my usual sarcasm and I look forward to further discussion and additional answers to the above questions.

Also we have the under-used New To Websphere section - could this be used? Renamed? Save the effort of splitting up by type.

Which leads to the third question - isn't this what the existing Websphere MQ FAQ section was intended for?

Still sarcasm free here.

Did you mean to imply that sarcasm is free/freely solicited here? Or that this is a sarcasm-free zone?

From a personal view, this thread is free of my usual sarcasm.

And the topic deserves serious consideration.

Voting is omni present now a days. But I thought, it would be too much to ask. Thats why I didnt mention it.

To answer your questions :

1. As far as I've seen until now, the crowd around here is sensible than most of the other forums (not sure if thats due to the ever present moderators ). So voting is definitely an viable option. We can make eligible the users after a certain number of posts.

2. It will be extremely helpful if experts refer us to these sections. Of course I dont see a way how you can enforce people to review these posts before asking questions. But we can make sure of it in some ways, like popups or some alerts or redirecting the page to that section.

We cant question the FAQs, but we can always question the expert !

I read the original post as asking for us to nominate the 'best of' and put them in (or refer to them from) a 'Best of' category. Yes, from time to time, pearls of wisdom emerge. Most often, really good information and ideas are exchanged. Nearly always, there is something to learn from posts and responses.

We don't ask all that much of visitors to this site. We ask for some clarity of thought, some research and testing before a post, a fair chance to post or respond, and non-judgemental replies.

The original post seems to me to be looking for a fast-path to knowledge. "If I read the really good posts, I can skip the others."

I'm pretty certain that there is no fast-path; and that reading more posts, rather than less, is the (not quite as fast-) path to knowledge.

Maybe we could come up with the top "N" topics that are regularly discussed and answered. List them in a sticky post with links to the most useful threads. It will save time searching and weeding through dozens of threads to find (or not find) an answer.
