So far, the only language that I can strongly code in that has an MQ API is COBOL. In my spare time I want to learn a second language that has an MQ interface. Right now I think my choices are VB, Java and C. What would be the best choice to direct my efforts at?
I am leaning to Java, since that will help me with JMS, my work laptop happens to have a copy of Visual Age for Java installed, and it seems that there is a forum dedicated to Java but not VB or C for a reason (more applications out there?).
The thing that intrigues me about VB is that I see a lot of cool application interfaces around (not necessarily MQ) that people create in VB, and I think learning VB would also help with VBScript, which I would like to know to better create asp pages for web development (again not MQ related). _________________ Peter Potkay

Well. Its a personal choice question.
Each language has its own pros and cons. Being a "C" guy i would strongly recommend that. There are quite a few features that are unique to this language and comes in handy at more times than one. One of those being, Pointers. If you get around it, you can literally play with MQ structures in your code. Coding using pointers could be hard, but at the same time once you get a hang of it, its much cheaper than writing the same app in Java or cobol. At the same time, debugging using Studio is Dream come true.....
Java on the other hand is an excellent language to develop GUI and other stuff. Ease of integrating your apps with Internet, asp etc.
VB is one of the most widely used languages, mostly because of its simplicity.
Not sure if you would ever get a definitive answer to your question.... But, hope this helps.
Cheers.

My suggestion would be to go with java. My group support MQSeries and I've noticed a rise in our java (jms) related questions over the last couple of years with a decline in our C ones. Of course, this could be related to the fact that java is relatively new and C is very stable..... |

Hey, you left out Perl! If you are looking to learn a language for commercial development, you probably want to look at Java and JMS but if you want something that you can use to whip up quick solutions to daily problems, Perl is great. When one of my project team clients needs to selectively delete or move messages, I can whip something up in Perl in 5 minutes. The MQSeries perl module implements the MQI down to the smallest detail and there is an OO interface as well. _________________ -- T.Rob
