Our management is looking at a long range plan and I was wondering if anyone might know when WepSphere MQ V6 will be going off support?
Thanks, |

You also sent me a private email but I'll answer in public....
No date has yet been announced for the EoS for V6.
Based on the rules, the earliest date for the EoS looks like April 2011. (Some V6 platforms were released after others, and it doesn't make sense to withdraw them piecemeal.) There will be a minimum 12 months notice of the official date, but I'd expect there to be a longer notice period, with the announcement maybe this year. There would also be the opportunity to purchase extended service contracts after that.
The EoS date has not been finalised, but I would not be surprised to see it set to that earliest opportunity. |

Let me tell you something about lifecycle of MQ..
i have one client who is using MQ v5.3 till today in productions with no issues and is quite happy with MQ v5.3
and
I have another client who is on MQ v7.0.0.1 and i m not sure if he has any issues...
So i wouldn't worry much about it.

If your MQ fails one day, for whatever reason, causing $$$ damage to your company, and your management asks you why you run an unsupported, out-of-date version, would you still say "because i did not worry about it" ? _________________ Regards, Butcher |

That is a risk the management was willing to take inspite of me making recommendations to them..prolly because i don't work for IBM.

And when his system goes down, he rings IBM for help getting his business back and they tell him it's out of support, you'll have one less client.

Guess again. He'll be on your doorstep, asking why you never warned him about this, pointed out the dangers of not upgrading and asking what he pays you for.
He could, I suppose, decide IBM are worthless and take his business elsewhere. If this client of yours has the money and the time to re-work his infrastructure to not use WMQ and the other IBM products he probably has.
Most clients in my experience throw their rattle out of the parm in a different direction, especially when the nice person on the IBM support desk mentions that, not only would IBM GS have warned him ahead of time about the support issue but would be delighted to help with the now urgent upgrade process, and a sales person will be calling shortly.

But i had already done this...hehe
it was the management who did not care...even after IBM recommends it.
Can you blame the consultant , if the management did not bother to upgrade their software?.

In every single instance. Even if the decision not to upgrade is documented and signed off. Goes with the job. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Well then, I guess the next time I will have to put a gun to client's head to make him upgrade his software..

I use a trout, but the same principle.
I've also found accidently wondering out loud how much the business would lose if the system was down for a day or so when key business stakeholders are walking past effective. This helps put the money "wasted on a pointless upgrade" in perspective. They also tend to have better firepower. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.
