I am able to copy data from a queue to a VBS file, but I am unable to view this file on the mainframe.
Could someone please let me know how to browse the messages written on a q in the mainframe
Thanks

Be specific. How and where are you trying to view the file? Why can't you view it? Did you get an error message when you tried?

I'd visit with the z/OS MQ system admins. They have likely linstalled the ISPF-panel utility to browse queues. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

This is more a z/OS question than a WMQ one. There are a number of ways to copy a file to SYSOUT (SyncSort probably best for a VBS IMHO).

Compile the browse sample or (IIRC) the ISPF panel has a browse function. Been a while since I used the panels; JCL fan personally. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

don't think you can directly browse this VBS file in the normal way. Trying to browse it in DSLIST gave "Invalid record length" error "Data set LRECL must be > 4 for RECFM=V."
If you want to see the messages in the file, use the CSQUTIL to load the file back to a queue in a qmgr and browse the queue from there. |

Or...
Use the IBM-supplied utility IEBGENER to specify the lrecl and blocksize of the input VBS dataset, and send the output to SYSOUT. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

Hi Bruce, thanks a lot for the information. I thought the message could only be read after loading the file back to a queue.
IEBGENER works like a charm! I dind't know that. Glad I learned something again!
ddevak, can just use IEBGENER, SYSUT2 to SYSOUT, SYSUT1 is the backup file. |

There are various ways to browse queues on a mainframe. Easiest is to use MQ client based programs like MO71, IH03 (RFHUTILC).
If you can't connect clients, then IBM supply some MQ ISPF interfaces (some are support pacs).
Personally I coded a REXX which browsed messages using the MQI to a PS file and then used ISPF browse.
Don't use VBS datasets, try using standard dsorg=PS, recfm=VB datasets if you want to browse them in ISPF. |
