Any of you good people had experiences with using MQ client ver 5.3 (Win2K) connected to MQ servers ver. 5.2 (Linux)? E.g. any potential issues to be aware of?
We have about 1200 MQ clients 5.0 connecting to a MQ cluster running 5.2 servers. We want to upgrade the clients to latest supported version, i.e. 5.3, but want to make sure that the client is backwards compatible with the older version of the server.

Hi Tony
Good as always to get your feedback! And certainly also good to hear that someone else has got this working.
Out of interest, how did you resolve user authorisation? I understand that with these versions that the client passes the (Windows) user ID that the server needs to be able to authorise?
We are looking to define the user ID on the MQ server, which is not a big issue right now because all of the clients will be using the same user ID. It will become a bit more of an admin overhead if and when the Windows client machines start working with unique user IDs. I understand that you can't tell the MQ client what user ID to pass as was the case with the older versions of the client.
Regards

From the Client Handbook for 5.3
Quote: |
A Version 5 client can connect to all queue managers, non-Version 5 as well as Version 5. If you are connecting to a non-Version 5 queue manager, you cannot use Version 5 features and structures in your WebSphere MQ or MQSeries application on the client.

So right now all your clients are logged on as and passing in the USER_ID of XYZ, but you are thinking in the future they will all be logged on as different IDs? In that case, either define all those potential IDs in a group on the Server and give that group the authority you want, or, set the MCA_User_Identifier variable of the SVRCONN channel that all the clients will be using to XYZ. That will override any ID that they pass to XYZ.
Adding all the IDs to the group can be a pain as employees come and go. Using the MCA_USER_ID field of the SVRCONN channel is a lot easier, if you can deal with the fact that anyone using that SVRCONN channel has the same authority as XYZ. _________________ Peter Potkay
