We are currently using MQ 5.3 on AIX 5.2
We are migrating to V6 over the next week end.
We have to uninstall 5.3 and install 6.0
I have a question regarding the messages that will be in the Queues during migration.
During uninstallation and installation the messages in the queues will be retained right ?
After installing V6, and starting the queue manager the messages will sill be in the queues right ?
Do i need to take any precautionary measures to retain the messages ?
Thanks |

Why? It's recommended to upgrade in place.

Possibly. It depends if the uninstallation process removes/unmounts the file system. I'd hate to rely on it personally.

Again, I'd hate to rely on it. The first time you start a v6 queue manager it will perform a one-time conversion of logs and messages, but I've never actually done an uninstall/reinstall myself; it's not the recommended course.

It's always best practice to take a system level backup before major work. I'd also unload the queues if you insist on uninstalling first. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

In the MQ V6 info center under Quick Beginnings for AIX, Migrating to V6
Quote: |
Uninstall WebSphere MQ and any WebSphere MQ service updates.
Install WebSphere MQ Version 6.0 by following the tasks set out in the book |
To upgrade to V6 we have to uninstall the previous versions. |

Uninstalling the product code does not delete the queue managers. |

Take backups of your messages and object definitions before you do any upgrades.
Have a recovery plan in case your messages and/of object definitions are lost. Test the plan. Test the plan. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

So it does!
Shows the last time I looked in the documentation before I did an upgrade...
On the plus side, at least I'm right from v7 as the v7 infocentre says:

You do not have to uninstall your current version before installing WebSphere MQ Version 7.0. |

Only on Windows can you upgrade in place from 5.3 to 6.0. On all the UNIXs you have to uninstall first.
Admit it Vitor, you run everything on Windows. _________________ Peter Potkay

When we upgraded from 5.3 to 6.0 on Solaris in development, I had no trouble with damage to messages.
For production, to be completely safe, our plan called for PUTting applications to be quiesced. We waited until all messages were consumed and queues were empty before proceeding with the upgrade.
As mentioned, a backup strategy is essential. There are several threads on the forum that might help you. Here is an example of one:

PS I'm glad Vitor is out of the Windows closet. |

For some sites, for some applications, this might not be possible. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.
