Hi All,

We are in process of migration of our IBM products , Following are the current versions.

1. Portal server v5.1
2. WAS v5.1
3. MQ v5.3
4. Message broker V5.0
5. Workflow v.3.5
6. DB2 v8.2

Can someone recommend to which latest stable versions I can migrate the above mentioned products?.

I can check with IBM but they will mention only the latest version, which are not stable.

Thanks.

Hi Akansha,

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
Just one clarification.

is MQ v7 stable at the moment?
I still prefer v 6,since we have licenses for this version.
Also can i apply the lastest fixpack for v6.0?

and is MB v6 ok , because we dont use any new features of v6.1
but i guess i don't have to buy v6.1 if i have v6.0 correct?

If you are paying the standard IBM license maintenance charges then you are entitled to install the latest versions of each product that you have already purchased.

Therefore there is no financial reason to use old versions.

So version x of a software is unstable, but as soon as version x+1 comes out, x becomes magically stable and x+1 is automatically garbage?

If the latest version of the software has been out for a month or so and there are no Hot Fixes, its stable.

Every version of every software on the planet has bugs and the potential to be unstable if you expose the bugs.

Typically a newwer version of the same product has less bugs than the previous version, so install the latest version if its been out for a while.

The latest fixpack of v6 is as "stable" as v7 because it's about the same age.

The question is how far do you want to be behind the technology curve to be comfortably stable? If you're that worried about the stability of the new technology, you could abandon your migration....

Workflow v3.6 is pretty much the latest (and potentially last) version available. It works just fine but it does need DB2 at version 9 or above I believe. It will need you to run a conversion job but once it is converted you can still roll back if you need to and it will still work on the converted database.

Of course it doesn't harm to take a back up in case your milage varies.

Many sites won't use the first release of a new version in production.

However WMB 6.1 has loads of service fixes available.

MQ V7 is new, but any bugs are likely to be in new features which you probably won't be using (and if you do then you need V7 anyway).

Not all of the products listed here will be supported with MQ v7.
