0-65,535 or something like that.

The TCP/IP recommendation is not to use 0-1024 (They are "reserved")

So the range is 1024 thru 65536.

I don't think MQ has any restrictions outside of this.

Many ports have some affinity to some applicaiton type based on casual agreement of the entire listener universe. Few applications hard-code port numbers. Web servers usually hard-code port 80. Well known ports are the lower range numbers.

IBM has registered (not reserved) its fondness for port 1414. That does not preclude anyone from using port 1414 for whatever they choose, or your MQ using port 80, provided it does not conflict with your other applications use of port numbers.

This is one of those best practice thingies.

If you want to check the contact admin port numbers, have a look at:

http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

You may use port numbers, which are assigned to other applications, but be aware, that these ports may be locked, when the application is running.

But I think, the limitation is not the number of ports, but the systems resources (try to start about 60,000 listeners on Windoes ).

Traditionally in the *nix world, all ports up to 1024 are restricted to root processes.
