Why do I need to install MQ client? Could I just use the MQ jar or libs instead?

You can certainly just use the JAR files for MQ Java applications.

However the full MQ client is free, why not install it?

If you copy the JAR files there is the risk that they will not get maintained by those responsible for your IBM SYSTEM software.

I've found application teams distributing ancient (v2) versions of the MQ jar files along with their business apps.

If your job is app development - fine, get the people responsible for system software installation to install the MQ client.

Search the Java forum on this site for this topic. Lots of discussion on this.

Not that anything zpat said was incorrect, but you'll find my opinion on this subject more in line with yours, ghimmler.

Lots of good discussion at the MQ Tech Conferance this year on this. I hope that in the next year IBM will officially clarify their position on what's really needed for Java apps to MQ in client mode.
