Is it possible to have the broker use a different java version other then the one it comes installed with? For example I am using Broker version 6.0.2 and java version 1.4.2, but I would like to use java version 1.5 (5) with Message broker 6.0.2

It is my understanding that other versions of java are not supported. If you wanted support for it, it would have to be raised as a Life-Cycle change request. It would be a bad idea to replace the JRE with any other (the product would no longer be supported).

Out of curiosity - why do you want Broker to use a different version of JRE ?

Some fix level added java 1.5 support to Message Broker, I think 6.0.2 should already support java 1.5. If you can find a script called mqsijava15.sh or .cmd in the bin directory you can just modify mqsiprofile according to it. Then restart your broker and it will run java 1.5. If you are using certificates you may also have to modify cacerts file in jre15/lib.

Yes, the latest v6.0 supports both Java 1.4.2 and Java 5. It's a profile setting; check the 'what's new' section in the docs for more information.

Have you followed the instructions in the InfoCenter here: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmbhelp/v6r0m0/topic/com.ibm.etools.mft.eb.doc/an26220_.htm

It's in the section "Running with Java 5".
