At my organization, there is slightly more MQ and WMB work than can be done by one person, but not nearly enough to keep two people busy. I am a member of a team where others specialize in various products, such as WebSphere App Server, Portal Server, and Process Server, as well as some OS admins.

My manager has said "oh, just teach so-and-so MQ so he can back you up". But, you know, MQ is really not a hobby and most of the calls I receive are complex and environment-specific. (In other words, it is seldom something as simple as a channel in retry or check a queue depth.)

How do other small shops handle backup when there is only enough work for one MQ admin? I don't mind too much that I have the pager all the time (environment is stable), except when I want to go out of town or there's a special event to attend.

Your ideas and experiences will be appreciated. Thanks.

Shirley

If the basic concepts are not ready, its not easy to go along with MQ or MB at all.

and we cant teach So and So MQ and MB details to anyone...

MQ Windows Administrator cant do good on UNIX if he doesnt know the unix functionalities and all in some extend.

My Suggestion:

Its good to document the repeated issues and the solutions for it in step by step format, that what i does here.its more over spoon feeding kind off.

later very sarcastically, they usually say "Oh is it that easy to do". (this is really sick) (you can also expect this too)

Gayathri,

I have documented our environment very thoroughly, but always from the perspective of "if I left, what would a new MQ admin need?"

Perhaps, as you suggest, I should start some documentation that is step-by-step for responding to the most common types of calls when the respondent is not an MQ admin.

One thing I know I am doing wrong: I have let the developers and testers get lazy when they call me. I don't make them tell me their queue manager name and queue name because I've gotten to know them myself. But if one of my teammates was responding to a call, that would certainly be a problem.

Thanks so much for your reply, it's given me a new angle for thinking about this.
