if /opt/mqm on solaris is deleted, Can I install MQ on the box with existing /var/mqm with data of the previous install that includes previous queue managers.
I do not want to delete data from /var/mqm as I will use same object definations present in the log for the new queue manager, can I do this ? |

yes you can do this.
Preferably take the back of /var/mqm for safer side

| but what about mqs.ini qm.ini and all, wont they will be over written or install does not over write these files ? |

It's the same as upgrading.
No, it's not deleted. No these files are not touched or overwritten until you start up queue managers.

Another, perhaps more conventional, method is to save the definitons with the MS03 support pac and rebuild them on the new version.
This in no way contradicts anything else posted in this thread.

| So if previous install is of MQ 5.3 and /opt/mqm is deleted I can install MQ v6 and the new queue manager should be visible when I do a dspmq and if I start qmgrs all the 5.3 MQ objects are updated with the newer version addons ? |

Ok, so the question from jefflowrey becomes why did you think it was necessary to delete /opt/mqm?

Actually our unix admin deleted this dir by mistake. Things are working fine. |

Your admin should be removed entirely from a position of responsibility.
