I think you're the one who needs the help.....

.....and not from a technical perspective!

Might be hard to have your PM post here, as you've expressed some.... dissatisfaction with him....... We are all very sympathetic.

Have you ever tried this? When someone asks you an idiotic question, don't answer it. Instead, answer the question he should have asked.

Tell him that only one set of MQ binaries are supported. Segregation of real-time processes is handled by creating multiple queue managers. Each queue manager will execute its own instances of all the processes it needs. These processes are not shared between queue managers. Queue managers keep their data segregated, too.

Emphasize to him how clever MQ is! Only one set of binaries, yet multiple "instances" of MQ (in the form of queue managers)!

Or, as we do here in Texas, hit him upside the head with a trout.

Do I need an export license to do that in the UK? Or is it on a GPL?

Your PM is reading that wrong.

There is no way to specify a specific value for the "/WebSphere_MQ_inst_home" path variable shown there.

EDIT:

To be more correct, you can set this once, during installation - but only on some platforms (mostly Windows).

You can't then re-run the installer and chose a different location and perform a second installation!

Where in that link does it state you can install multiple MQ versions. I couldn't find any reference that led me to believe you could.

Cheers,

How to argue with him?? he saying tht we can create a symbolic link as given in tht link

Quote:
If the /WebSphere_MQ_inst_home and /var filesystems do not have enough space, you can create an extract directory for the WebSphere MQ software (such as /home_dir/mqm) and move into this directory. You must create symbolic links from the /WebSphere_MQ_inst_home/mqm and /var/mqm directories to this extract directory.

please advice

Right, you can create a symbolic link. And perform an install.

And then you can MOVE that symbolic link to another location, and attempt to re-run the install. If you succeed, and get the installer to re-run, AND don't manage to clobber the existing install, then you have "two" installs.

BUT only one of those installs will ever run at any given time. And that is the one that is currently linked to the right place.

And so this provides absolutely no real value over one install. It's just as easy, and the same as doing one install, and then copying all the files to another location. The second location is useless.

And this is not an HA mechanism.

And this is not a backup mechanism.

And this is not a change management mechanism, either.

Any real requirement that your PM has can be handled with a single MQ install, or with good change management procedures.

By telling him to tell you want he wants to achieve not how to achieve it.

That's a great point Vitor...

Career,
In this relationship, someone "YOU" has to be the MQ expert implementing the requirement and the other person "YOUR PM" the one submiting the actual requirement, in other words: "He should submit what he is trying to achieve", not the hows to go about it. You should be the one evaluating his requirement and figuring out the best way to implement it. At the end of the day that's why yall have different job titles.

Otherwise your Project Manager might as well jump on a terminal and implement it himself... Pesonally I think there are too many cooks in the kitchen!!!

I've met the kind of PM being described here, and there's a very serious risk he'll try just that.

Properly selected passwords are essential.

Joking aside these people can be hard to deal with. Firm but fair. Or hard with a trout.

career,

Does this company already own an MQ license? If so, raise a PMR with IBM. Perhaps your dreadful PM will believe it then.

Vitor,

Send $14.99 (sorry, U.S. currency only) together with your shipping address, and a big, smelly Texas trout will be on its way.
