Can anyone tell me where the documentation is that tells me that an index type of none will remove expired messages from the queue?

Nowhere. It's an MQGET (of any type) on a queue or (on z/OS) a scheduled job / command. I'm assuming z/OS as you've posted here & are talking about indexes.
