I am interested to know how many concurrent MQ client connections can be handled by a single Windows queue manager without issues of reliability, or performance.
Does anyone have experience of say 5,000 concurrent, active, MQ client connections to a single client channel on single Windows Queue Manager?
Can it run reliably for long periods of time? |

You'd have to run tests and check
a) the machine is disk bound
b) the machine is IO bound
d) the machine is CPU bound

And there's a difference between 5,000 heavily active clients, and 5,000 mostly passive clients. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

Lets say one message per minute per channel.
I am not looking for throughput guidance, more whether Windows and it's IP stack has stabliity issues with a large number of connections.
Does anyone operate a Wintel QM with more than 2000 client channel connections? |

I remember Peter Potkay having some things to say on this subject a couple of years ago.
I've seen also a few posts from people having trouble getting more than 1 or 2k client connections going to Windows, and having to do some kind of kernel or network stack tuning...
But that's about all I can say. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

We have Windows servers with up to 2,500 client connections no problem. And these are older servers. Win2K SP4, MQ 5.3.11, only 4gig memory.
This is as classic a It-Depends question as you can get. Size of messages, # of messages, other MQ API calls, etc all come into play. I tried desperatly to get IBM to give me some formula to determine how many channels a QM can run. They didn't and now I know why.
There are a couple of posts by me on this subject. They all come to that same conclusion. It depends. _________________ Peter Potkay
