Scenario: 2 nodes(N1 & N2) on Solaris with MQ 5.3.13 are in SRDF

Qmgr on N1: ABC, DEF, GHI
Qmgr on N2: LMN, OPQ, UVW

The working directory for all six qmgrs is on common disk. i.e. /var/mqm/qmgrs
But ofcourse installation path /opt/mqm are separate.

We want:

1. N1 failover to N2. From MQ point of view, this would mean: all 6 qmgrs are now running on N2.
2. Then we upgrade N2 to MQ 6.
2.1 That would mean stop all 6 qmgrs on N2(all MQ activity); unistall MQ 5.3 and re-install MQ 6.0 and start all 6 qmgrs.

Bad day scenario: suppose MQ upgrade fails or some problem occurs and we've to revert back to N1, and start all 6 qmgrs on N1,

Since the file system /var/mqm/qmgrs is on common disk, certain attributes of this will change during upgrade to MQ 6. e.g. qm.ini and mqs.ini(correct me if I'm wrong) and ?don't know what else.
For that we'll substitute old /var/mqm/qmgrs(that we backed up before upgrade)

Q1. Would this work?

Q2. Does it work without doing this step, i.e. go ahead and use /var/mqm/qmgrs from MQ 6.0 version to N1 mqver is 5.3.13

as long as N1 is not upgraded and N2 is on V6 with all Queue Managers,
you'll be on 'one' leg so to speak. N1 needs to be upgraded too asap to complete the upgrade.

there is no way back, sure you can fiddle around with backup's etc

you said 'A', now say 'B' asap... so you are on 'two' legs again...

Thanks Michael.

You are right about 1 legged concept, I totally agree.

Last night I spoke with IBM, so I am sort of answering my own quesitons:

Ans -1. Yes. We can replace var/mqm/qmgrs and this would work.
But in realtime scenario, i.e. business day when messages are flowing to and fro, if we go ahead with this step, the fate of messages if uncanny.

Ans -2. No. There is no way back as you commented, Michael. We cannot substiture /var/mqm/qmgrs directory that belongs to MQ-6 to a box with MQ V5.3.

I assume that most of you know the answers, still I took liberty to publish, just in case it might help someone.

Thanks Michael.
