With regards to upgrading MQ 5.3 for Windows (CSD11) to MQ 6.0 for Windows, I have not been able to get the upgrade to produce the Eclipse MQExplorer when it's done.

Here is the process I have been using.
- This is on Windows 2003, sp1.
- There is no problem with local accounts querying our AD groups.
- I am logged on as a local administrator.
- I have NO SSL certificates on any channels.
1) With MQ 5.3 at CSD11 installed, I set the IBM MQSeries to Manual and reboot.

2) I log in, shut down the amqmtbrn.exe process (right click and Hide).

3) At this point I have a queue manager under MQ 5.3 which has persistent messages in a few of the queues. The queue manager is not running, nor are any MQ processes.

4) Going by the Quick Beginnings Guide, I launch the MQ 6.0 install with no problems. It notices that Eclipse is not installed, so I tell it to install WebSphere Eclipse 3.01. It does so with no problems.

5) Next I run proceed to run the WebSphere MQ 6.0 install. It recognizes the MQ 5.3 on the hard drive, and shows both the Update and Customer install processes. I choose Update. The install runs with no problems.

6) At the end, the install runs a process which is called Prepare WebSphere MQ Wizard, which says it will migrate existing queue managers and data from a previous installation. When it is done, the has a window which has "Launch WebSphere MQ Explorer" grayed out.

7) I click on Finish, and IT starts up MQ. If I go to the Start--> Program --> WebSphere MQ and there are only two Icons: IBM Key Management and Prepare WebSphere MQ Wizard. There is no WebSphere MQ Explorer icon.

8 ) I can go into RUNMQSC and the queue manager is there, and the queues have data in them. Unfortunately, I have no Explorer GUI - it wasn't installed/configured for the queue manager.

9) I shut down the queue manger, install FixPack 6.0.2.1, rerun Pepare WebSphere MQ Wizard (which starts up MQ) and still no GUI. RUNMQSC works fine, but I still have no GUI whatsoever.

I have tried to follow the install/upgrade exactly as indicated in QUick Beginnings, but it never sets up the GUI if upgrade the current install of MQ 5.3. I do a search for the hard drive for STRMQCFG.EXE and there is none installed.

Has anyone seen this? I replicated this behavior on a number of times on 3 different machines: twice on Windows 2003 sp1 and once on Windows XP sp2.

Run the installer again - you might have to uninstall the FP - and choose "repair", and choose custom (if it's not already in a custom mode) and specifically choose the MQ Explorer option.

Hmm, I didn't think about that - clever.

I did it as you suggested and it did indeed install the Eclipse MQExplorer. However, when I launched the MQ Explorer, it showed the queue manager running, but was in a Disconnected state. When I right-clicked on the queue manager, Connect did not show..not sure why. I even reinstalled the 6.0.2.1 fixpack and reran the Prepare MQSeries wizard, and no change in behavior. It probably is not a problem that could not be overcome with some good old-fashioned troubleshooting, but I don't have much Eclipse or Java skills, so I left it at that.

I did open an ETR with IBM and it turns out that what I described in my original post is a "known issue". They provide a solution, and I have tried it and it works.

Basically their solution is when upgrading, don't select the Upgrade option, select the Custom option and explicity tell it to install the MQ Explorer piece. Continue with the installation and all is well.

Apparently whoever wrote the installer is looking for a version of Eclipse MQ Explorer when going through the upgrade (my opinion). If he doesn't find it, then he doesn't consider the MQ Explorer "already installed" so it doesn't get added to the list of things to do when upgrading from 5.3 to 6.0. The problem with that is that in 5.3 all you have is the MMC, so the logic is kinda screwy. Smells to me like someone did not test the upgrade very well, or had low standards of what success is.

I'm surprised I didn't find a thread on MQSERIES.NET discussing this situation already.

I did find the alternate upgrade method discussed which is to uninstall 5.3 first, and then install 6.0 to the same directory structure. I have done this several times and it works well also. However, it is not an "officially supported" method by IBM, so I am a bit skittish of doing it with our Production data.

A side note - by using VMWare Server running on my desktop, I was able to snapshot and rollback to my hearts content. It made running through all the upgrade scenarios a breeze. VMWare Server is free, but you still have to pay for the Guest OS. Oh well, half a loaf is better than none.

Below are the IBM comments from the ETR:

This is a known issue when selecting the update feature. It will not
install the Explorer piece. There is a technote and an APAR - which
is to update the manual, not fix the install. You need to make sure the
prerequisites are installed, Eclipse, and perform a "custom" install
which allows you to select the Explorer piece. If you are running
a new install and select the Server, it will install the Explorer.
Please see the following technote concerning this problem:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=171&context=SSFKSJ&context=S
SWHKB&q1=migration+Eclipse+Explorer&uid=swg21225166&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&l
ang=en
. It is Apar IC47282 - last item in the list.
If you select the APAR, it will give a more detialed explanation on the
update vs install.
You should be able to go back and install the Explorer piece. Or
follow the instructions in the following technote for Explorer only
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=171&context=SSFKSJ&context=S
SWHKB&q1=install+Explorer&uid=swg21247934&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&lang=en
**Note that if you have the server installed, you do not need to
install the Client piece for Explorer to work.

Someone had to be first!

Thank you for a very detailed and useful post.

Apologies if you already know this, but I think this is a Java problem. If you right click on Websphere MQ in the Explorer, then Properties, then Configuration information, if the mqjbnd05 loaded is No, then you will have the above problem.

Solution is to find the mqjbnd05.dll (should be in installpath\Java\lib). Copy the path into the Path environment variable, stop and restart MQ Explorer. Hope it works
