Hi
I like analyze people behavior.
I have little question.
Have you deliberated why people ask very simple (sometimes stupid) questions ?
I can find here and in other forums two types of this question.
1. Without additional information
“My application doesn’t work. I can not connect to QMGR. Please help”
2. Asking about things what I can in 10 seconds find in google.
“What is …”
In my opinion very often it is because of idleness.

first of all no question is stupid ever!
however most answers can be found using search or google or even documentation
IMHO it al depends on the type of person, there are the ones who are self-learning and there are the ones that need spoonfeeding.
I would like to know too what drives someone to ask rather then find himself...
I am a self-learner so I just don't know the "other" side

This may be the case in some instances. In some very specialised cases it may be a kind of ingrowing idleness, where the poster is so "busy" doing his own self-important thing so posts a question where the little people can spoonfeed them the answer.
I fear that in the majority of cases these simple questions (the incidence of which has increased over recent months I think) come from people who find themselves using a Websphere product without proper training, mentoring or support and with deadlines to meet. It may be connected to certain IT practices prevalent in certain geographical regions, but certainly not limited to that! Remember that MQ is a very large topic and can be daunting to the beginner.
I'd also agree that no question is stupid but some are best answered by reference to the documentation rather than by spoonfeeding. Learning is to be encouraged. If someone asks a simple question but in a way that indicates they're trying to learn but are just lost then they should be helped. We've all been there at one time or another - or maybe it's just me!
Of course, if the poster insists on spoonfeeding then they deserve all they get!!

Hi,
I think this is the question for newbies...so I can ans better than grandmasters. Well, you see even the simple question looks overwhelming in the beginning. That's why.
Why they don't google first? You should mandatory charge, so probably they'll google first...everybody* wants for free.

Yes, but sometimes I see questions "What does parameter X mean ?".
This is the best example.
How I can find this infomation faster, asking here or searching docs ?
Searching docs will take seconds. Even for beginers.

Or use the search button thoughtfully provided at the top of the page? It's a valid question and I'm not sure there's a valid answer.
Not certain about mandatory charging, does go against the spirit of the board rather but I do think more people should make a donation towards costs. After all, this is not just a forum - it's a knowledge base!

| I would have to say that most stOOpid questions I read.....seem like someone is looking for a hand out. Typically some people ask questions that shows there laziness to look for an answer and they seem to think people on here are going to guide them through their whole job. I hate to say it, but I could pin point on a map where most of those questions are coming from. |

My comment above regarding management practices in geographical areas refers. There is a lot of injustice in this world, and sometimes people are treated very harshly.

I think I wasn't understood correctly.
Maybe it is beacause of my English what you noticed.
I just wanted to help people to solve problems easier.
Thats why I opened this discussion.
If you read my posts here you will see that I'm open and I always try to help.
I didn't want to offend anybody.

I think it's the people we're trying to help which are at issue here.
And have pity on the non-native English users. Their points may be valid even if their grammer is not.

Hmmm.
I suppose people ask questions here because:
- they want to
- they can
- they usually get lots of good feedback.
So, for you, this post is both the problem and solution.
As to the 'stupid question' reference, it's easier to know the answer to a question if you have experience with the product. When faced with (overwhelmed with) a problem or perceived problem, asking a question is a an appropriate behavior and a good start.
Your assuming that stupid questions come from lazy sysadmins tells us more about you than it does those posing questions here. As to your analyzing the behavior of others, look inside yourself first before judging others. |

Well Well Well, Look what I found, this LINK, with the same question I had in my mind from weeks.
I agree that No question is stupid, but some people are annoying, when they post the same question , which has been answered more than an occassion (Very basic Q), while theey can easily get the answer by a simple SEARCH , which BTW has been pointed out many times.
I dont say its WRONG to post very naive questions, but I say "Think before u post".
I know one sol would be to have sub-forums, with BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, EXPERT ..... level seclusion like some of the other knowledge sites (JavaRanch).
Any way... what I am saying is I am a beginner too and its a question of common sense to search before you post.... no bitching and stuff.... take it easy...I meant in a good way though.
And I am not sorry If my english is bad, becoz I dont care as long as it makes a point here |
