Hi,

I want to upgrade from MQ series 5.3 CSD 12 to MQ 6 on windows 2003 server. Iam not able to start with the installation . I get an error -
One or more problems occured . View the trace/ or Log fiels for details.

No mQ processes are running . But, just before thsi error is thrown , it shows the performance monitor program is running and it needs to be stopped. Not sure if this is the problem. in that case, where can i find this
proces/program ? Please help.

No Gayathri,

I did not uninstall the 5.3 or CSDs. But is it required for an upgrade?
I have upgradeed earlier on some other systems and it worked fine.
Not sure what is causing the issue.

Thanks.

Hi

Here if you want to go ahead with MQ 6.0 from MQ 5.3, you must have to un-install the 5.3 product and its respective csd's at first.

The mq migration document will give a correct picture of this.

I think and believe that you have upgraded the csd's to the existing MQ.

MQ 6 file system is 64 bit, its different from MQ 5.3

(We've discussed this in the forum, if you search you will get some info)

Thanks and Regards

I have installed MQ V6 several times on WIN based server without uninstalling the previous version of MQ. I believe that is why it is called an upgrade. I have run into the issue of having to stop performance monitor in the past, with 5.3 installs, but I have not seen this issue with 6.0 yet.....but I have not had to install it with a system that was running it at the time.

Hi Thanks,

How do i stop the performance monitor ? Because , one step before i get error AMQ4739 , it shows performance programs are running . Is there a service running for this or it has any process ids that needs to be stopped to proceed with the MQ 6 installation. Please advise.

For what it's worth, I installed v5.3 over v5.2 on a number of platforms and (where applicable) I've installed v6.0 over v5.3.

The only time I deliberately uninstalled was v5.1 over v2.0, and that was just to be certain the wretched thing was gone.

I have done same - installed mq v6.0 over v5.3 It works and does not need to unstall for any reasons.

be sure to stop all existing QMGRS and then use the services control panel (services.msc) and set the MQ service to MANUAL.
Then reboot the system. MQ 5.3 wont start so no DLL's will get loaded.
If the service control icon appears just stop it. Then you can upgrade 5.3 to 6.0
However it is just as easy to remove 5.3 first. This is my preferred upgrade method.
My rule of thumb is
1) upgrades within a major version (eg 5.2 to 5.3) ok.
2) upgrades where the major version changes, remove the old product first (eg 5.3 to 6.0).

The install of 6.0 will detect that you had 5.3 on your system and use the same settings for the queues and log directories as you have for 5.3 thus allowing you to use your existing qmgrs.

It goes without saying that if possible take a backup of the existing qmgrs with saveqmgr unless you are sure you can rebuild your QM from first principals just in case the old qmgr can't be upgraded (This has never happened in my experience but it is better to be safe there)

There's nothing wrong with a little paranoia.

So Is this rule valid for all platforms(AIX,SOLARIS...) or just Windows?

I've had situations on Windows 2003, SP-2 with MQ 5.3(CSD10 or above, can't remember) when:
I just stop Qmgrs and NOT delete them. Then uninstalled MQ 5.3.X and reinstall 6.0. And MQ 6.0 picked up old Qmgrs and started working...but that was long ago on UAT machine.
Just wondering, has anybody tried this on other platforms...!!!

I am answering my own question, (if wrong, you can point out)

On AIX, Solaris...we've to Stop QMGRS, unistall CSD first then Base MQ 5.3 keeping the data intact(Use MS03 & copy /var/mqm to avoid bad day) and reinstall MQ 6.0.

I read the post answered by Michael Dag in this forum...guess I am clear now.
