The original post and some of the responses remind me that some people choose to pass judgment on a whole group of people, whether that be the employees of IBM, or the citizens of the United States, based on a bad experience they had with a few individuals. I'm not trying to discount the poster's anger over being dropped, or BBJ's frustration with senior managers, but we're talking about 300,000 people in the case of IBM and 300 MILLION in the case of the US. How can you possibly try to make a blanket statement about such a large group of people? I've met senior managers who treat people like commodities. I've also met senior managers who care deeply about the people on their team, and that's the type of person I strive to be. At the end of the day there's still a lot of people (whether they're IBMers, Americans, or both) who follow the golden rule and aren't going to screw over the next guy...
And while this is the general discussion forum, to those of you who want to argue about the history of British imperialism, the war in Iraq, your love for multinational companies, etc., I think you'll find a much more willing audience on any number of other discussion websites. I think you'll find yourself in a flame war very quickly, and perhaps then you'll realize that's why we try to minimize those kinds of discussions around here. _________________ Brandon Duncan

Come on chaps, I'm British! This means I'm genetically unable to understand other languages.
I'll be forced to use the established communication method of "British abroad" and start talking .... very .... slowly .... and .... clearly ....
BBJ - if you don't like being treated like a commodity by senior management you probably need to find a different industry sector with different ethics. Myself, I like it because you can make pots of money! Where I get the problem is inept management that either doesn't make decisions or makes random ones based on committee / political structures and dumps the resulting mess on IT. Or me as the obvious scapegoat.
(But you can get more money by offering to take the blame..... )
These managers cut across ethnic, religious, political, racial and social boundaries. I find any kind of discrimination on these lines offensive and counter productive; many Americans / Indians / Swiss nationals are highly effective individuals for whom I have respect. This whole "Europe first", "Europe for the Europeans" business is short sighted and just wrong. Protectionist barriers will lead to a United States of Europe that will grind us down more than the EU has ever dreamed of doing.
We should instead be grading on ability, forcing inept managers out into jobs and/or geographic areas where they can do no harm but spend their days forming a committee to look into forming a committee to produce the parameters for an agenda.
Or just load them onto a "B" Ark..... _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

I've found that if I keep lowering my expectations, I'm a much happier person. |

Limbo through your career!
Or is it that your career's in Limbo.....
And if it is, do you know the way out? Mine's been stuck in there for ages.... _________________ Honesty is the best policy.
