Folks, as a newbie to mainframes and struggling a lot on it, I ask any suggestions on books that may help me around...

The IBM redbooks are too much for me right now, big, to much detail in some cases (command books) and not much detail in others (overview books).

I am searching Amazon.com for something that gives some concepts and instructions to interact with:
-Mainframe basics: processes, filesystems, jobs, procs, etc.
-TSO and ISPF
-JCL
-CICS
-OMVS

I already know some stuff from the past 6 months reading the some redbooks, but I do not feel any way comfortable...

I see how hard is to find a MF book summing up all these things, but I think it´s worth asking for...

So, can any of the old-school people help me out?

I miss so much my *nix...

maybe you should have a look at the "ABC for system programming" redbooks. in comparison with the product related manuals these are build a little bit more activity related (how to do this, how to do that).

and have an experienced colleague at hand!

good luck.

Could anyone check those books on Amazon and say which one is worth?

I'm fond of Mike Murach books.

Here's one for TSO/ISPF: http://www.amazon.com/Murachs-MVS-TSO-Concepts-ISPF/dp/0911625569/sr=8-1/qid=1168292077/ref=sr_1_1/002-1304753-4375220?ie=UTF8&s=books

Consider taking at a minimun these two classes from IBM:

ES155: z/OS Facilities. http://www-304.ibm.com/jct03001c/services/learning/ites.wss/us/en?pageType=course_description&includeNotScheduled=y&courseCode=ES155

ES155 is a week-long course covering z/OS concepts and terminology.

ES10A: Fundamental System Skills in z/OS. http://www-304.ibm.com/jct03001c/services/learning/ites.wss/us/en?pageType=course_search&sortBy=5&searchType=1&sortDirection=9&includeNotScheduled=15&rowStart=0&rowsToReturn=20&maxSearchResults=200&searchString=es10a&language=en&country=us

ES10A is a hands-on lab course covering TSO, ISPF, UNIX System Services, JCL and Utilities.

If you can only take one, take ES10A.
