Hi,

( 1) Can you advise me whether I can have QMgrs in MQ V531 & MQ V6 running concurrently? e.g. Qmgr MQA1 in V531 and MQA2 in V6 running in z/OS V1R7.
What are the possible conflict (if any)?
What are the extra precaution (if any) I have to take?
Any other(s)?
( 2) Thank you.

.Hoe San.

yes, it is possible.

your early code must be at the highest level (V6)

you must makie sure you use the proper libraries (jcl steplib, linklist, ....)

you must make sure you use the proper utilities (e.g. not using CSQOREXX from 531 on MQV6 and vice-versa. some things may work, others will not, you get warnings, ...)

i am sure there is a section for this in the proper manuals. (either system setup guide or system administration guide).

Are you using shared queues?

No, in my shop, there is no shared queue.

Mr Butcher, I don't get when u mentioned "your early code must be at the highest level (V6)". Can u help to explain a bit more so that I can understand and get enlighten?

In my shop, under normal circumstances, a product library when install will have the version, release and maintenance level as 1 of the qualifier in the naming convention in z/OS.

May I also seek your advice if I am able to run e.g.
1. utility CSQUTIL in V531 with V6.0 QMgrs
2. utility CSQUTIL in V6.0 with V5.3.1 Qmgrs
3. is V6.0 down compactible with V5.3.1

Thanks for your all your advice.

Early code:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv6/v6r0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.mq.csqsav.doc/csqsav0413.htm

Did you install V5.3.1? Usually the system administrator would understatent the meaning of "early code" ...

I suggest you read chapter 3 in the system setup guide ov version 6 "migration from a previous version", this should answer your questions.

if you do not know what the early code is refer to the system setup guide chapter 2 task 3 . To be able to run 5.3.1 and 6.0 on the same lpar you must use the early code of version 6 during IPL of the lpar.

your questions 1 + 2 - i dont know. if you want my advice - dont mix it. Use the V5.3.1 utilities for your V5.3.1 queuemanagers an use the V6 utilities for your V6 queuemanagers. why do you want to mix? where do you want to mix? in batch? why? whats in your linklist? 5.3.1?
if i run 5.3.1 then these libraries are in my linklist. if i upgrade a queuemanager i put the V6 libraries into the STCs. Same with the batchjobs.
Later, when everything is upgraded, i will also change the linklist (be aware this will affect the application jobs running) and all the steplibs are obsolete again. (other shops, other migration strategie, this is just my way to do this).

What do you mean with "down comaptible"? if you run a qmgr at version 6 it is version 6. your 5.3.1 applications should not have problems with that.

again, read the sections in the setup guide of V6
