Hi all,
At present we have MQ 5.3 installed on a Sun Solaris box. We now want to install MQ 6.0 on that box. So, this being the case, can i remove MQ 5.3 and install fresh MQ 6.0 on the Sun server, without losing any queue manager data? Is it a MUST to take a backup before i follow the above procedure?

My manager is not that much into installing MQ 6.0 over MQ 5.3. That being the case and i am left with removing MQ 5.3 and installing fresh MQ 6.0. Can someone suggest me if this is not going to mess up queue manager data?
Note: (The box is a development box, so we need not worry much but still i want to keep the queue manager data without being lost in transition to MQ 6.0)
Please advise....
Thank you all in advance.

When you say: "queue manager data", do you mean messages in queues or do you mean object definitions?

I meant object definitions not messages in it.
What i meant was, suppose say i have 3 queue managers with 15 queues each. I am not worried about the messages in it, but i will be fine if i am left with the same configuration (which means 3 queue managers and 15 queues each).
I appreciate your reply...

You can use saveqmgr to backup the object definitions, then delete the qmgrs, then remove v5.3, install v6, apply rp2, create the queue managers and use the output from saveqmgr to restore the objects.

You need to manually take care of things like linear logs and log attributes when you create the qmgrs.

while uninstalling the fixpacks for 5.3 on solaris and the base code, you can keep the qmgrs (data + object definitions), then install MQ 6.0 base,
start your qmgrs they will be migrated, then apply rp 2.

you should be fine, what's the problem with 'migrating' versus a 'clean' install? migration is a normal procedure for production boxes as you don't want to loose any valuable information...

Uninstalling WebSphere MQ on any of the IBM supported UNIX-like platforms (AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Linux ) does not touch the queue manager definitions or data. Windows is different, you get the option of removing the data. You are recommended to backup the data however.
