Hi all,
The backup strategies of queue manager configuration on AS/400 is possible only when the queue manager is inactive. Am i correct?

In my company, i cannot stop channels and the queue manager must remain active. In this case, how do i take the backup of my queue manager configuration on AS/400.

I very much appreciate if you can advise (possibly with the procedure) on taking the queue manager configuration backup on AS/400. Our MQ version on AS/400 is 5.3.

Thank you in advance.

In general, on all platforms, you can not take a disk level backup of a queue manager while the queue manager is running, and get a consistent image of the queue manager state.

In general, you need to understand what you actually are trying to back up. For example, if you are not interested in backing up the MESSAGES that are on the queue, but only in backing up the definitions of queues and channels and etc... then you can use the saveqmgr SupportPack and backup the output files.

If you are interested in backing up the MESSAGES, then you will need to stop the queue manager.

Thank you very much for your reply. I appreciate that.
What is the support pac number for the saveqmgr you advised me earlier?
I really appreciate if you can show me a way to get me that support pac (and also provide additional suggestions before i use the support pack).
I appreciate your earliest reply.
Thank you

MS03 is the one you're looking for.

I've also used a slightly "unconventional" method.

1. Record image for the queue manager you want to save.
2. Save the QMxxxx Queue Manager Lib (this would also have the journals).
3. Save the IFS link for the queue manager (/QIBM/UserData/mqm/qmgrs/xxxx) !!! Keep an eye out for messages listing objects that could not be saved !!!

4. Restore all of the above (to a different system) and bring up the queue manager
5. use recreate image to recreate any queues/objects that were not properly saved.

6. If this does not work repeat steps 1-5 till you get it to work.

I was lucky cuz it has worked every single time for me (about 10 or so) and I used it since at the time I did not know of MS03 mentioned by bbburson.
MS03, it seems, should be the way to go.
