I found this description of MAXHANDS on this site and in the system admin guide:

"MAXHANDS(integer)
The maximum number of open handles that any one task can have at the same time. Do not specify a value less than zero or greater than 999,999,999."

It makes sense that each "task" has this limit, so the total number of used handles system-wide can exceed the per "task" max. However, does anyone know how IBM defines a "task"??? Is it a thread of a connecting program, or a combination of the Application Name, Process ID, and Thread ID that you see when you do a status on a queue in MQExplorer, or maybe even at the command server level? There seems to be very little in the way of documentation as to what IBM considers a "task" to be...

At http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv6/v6r0/topic/com.ibm.mq.csqzaj.doc/csqzaj1092.htm this parameter is said to be "The maximum number of open handles that any one connection can have at any one time." .. which is a bit more precise.

Also at http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv6/v6r0/topic/com.ibm.mq.csqzaj.doc/csqzaj1022.htm : "The maximum number of open handles that any one connection can have at the same time."

I wonder... was it some old documentation you were reading?

FWIW this is the link I use to the MQ docs (there's a search box which usually finds useful info if you specify good search arguments) : http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv6/v6r0/index.jsp

Thanks mvic, that's a LOT clearer! You're right, the documentation I was reading was a little old, for WMQ 5.3. Good to see that the documentation gets an overhaul along with the rest of the product in v6

It's a six year-old post
