Would people find it useful to have saveqmgr also save zOS qmgr definitions (v6 only)?
I would expect that this would be used as an MQ client program (ie, run from windows/unix platforms to a zOS server qmgr)
It's a bit of work that I'm willing to do iff there is the demand. _________________ -wayne |

For me (voted: Yes) this is a matter of skill sets and convenience - On some sites, I have a process running each day, connecting to all QMs on my network with saveqmgr as client, and saving defs in one backup dir. I would love it if I could run it against the MF as well, instead of having to FTP the CSQUTIL output to my backup dir as I do now...
Plus, in many sites that I support, the MQ Admin doesn't even know how to run jobs, so this would allow him to manage definitions backup without any MF skills.

I would expect that companies running MF should have skilled specialists....
My main reason for saying this is: I wouldn't expect that they invest a lot of $$$$$ in a box without having some one to service it.
Next we have the specialist that are guru' on the distributed platform, knowing just a little about MF.
What about a DR situation, how can a company do that without the right skills ?? Oh that's called outsourcing or On Demand (they pay for this service)
I've configured the CSQUTIL (amd my other MF coleagues also) to run controlled by OPC.
Next why keep the backup outside the MF environment ? Is MF unsecure/unreliable ? No way
What is the reason then ?? I can't accept the answer: lack of skill....
Who are setting up a SHARED queue configuration on a MF site ?
Systemprogrammers and MQ administrators.
Don't start a hetz here, just some thoughts...... No harm and no offends.
And Wayne I would like the option too, but allow it to use the ClientConnection table to allow us to use security, or give us parameters for the SCYEXIT and SCYDATA.
My client will not allow unautorized connections, I use a Security exit package......

Actaully, the latest release (v601) of ms03 allows you to specify this on the command line. And ... the client version has allowed you to use channel tables since day 1.
Thanks for the feedback and information .... _________________ -wayne |

One directory on one server that has every MQ definition for your entire company, that can then be checked into a version control tool as well.
All your points are valid Oz. And we intend to keep backing up our MFs via regularly scheduled runs of CSQUTIL regardless.
But it will be nice to have another alternate way to back up the defs. And will allow us distributed geeks any easy way to look at the output.
This past weekend, I had to change / delete / create 100's of remote q defs and channels on my MF QMs. The night of the change it took me all of 60 seconds, literally, to accomplish this. Earlier in the week, I used MO71's ability to export the MF defs into a MS03 style text file, did my global changes in Notepad.exe, and then the night of the change, just used these updated MS03 style files as input for MO71 to change all those q defs in a blink of an eye. Could a MF guru have done it just as easily using their tools. I guess. But I sure like having this other option. And that's why I was the one that originally asked Wayne if perhaps MS03 should have the same backup power as MO71.
We use MS03 now in client mode in conjunction with Capitalware's MQAUSX exit. Wayne was kind enough to add this ability a few weeks ago. Every QM has a MS03.QMBACKUP SVRCONN channel with full admin rights that is protected by the exit.

Peter, right on.
I'm using a similar tool a ms03c, but working the other way: retrieving the configuration from the distributed platforms and keeping the definitions on z/OS.
Tho also allows me to keep track there on the complete configuration, and keep it in a safe place. z/os Dino or not...
About security shure, I've just tried the ms03 using my security exit suite and it works fine. Thanks Wayne. Now I have to change some procedures...

Warning: intentional dual post
I have made updates ms03 to support remote saving of z/OS and iSeries mqsc definitions. For z/OS, in addition to saving the usual stuff (queues channels...) the program also :
1. The CSQ6SYSP, CSQ6LOGP and CSQ6ARVP macros are reconstructed.
2. SET LOG, SET SYSTEM and SET ARCHIVE commands are created (if they have been entered on the queue manager)
3. DEFINE BUFFPOOL, DEFINE LOG, DEFINE PSID, DEFINE CFSTRUCT (if in qsg) commands are created
So, I'm looking for a few people to test. You MUST have MQ V6 on z/OS, and I need some people that have QSG's to run the program.
You can either PM or e-mail me and I'll send you directions on how to get the beta.
Thanks.....
Disclaimer: I've only done minimal testing so far, so expect to find some mistakes _________________ -wayne |

V6.0.2 of MS03 has just been posted to the supportpac webpage. New with v6.0.2:
a. Added ability to run remotely to a zOS queue manager (V6 qmgr only)
b. Added ability to run remotely to a iSeries queue manager
c. fixed bug where lines were running > 70 chars _________________ -wayne |
