Folks,
my aim is to build a playpen environment on a Linux image running under VMWare, on my laptop and pehaps on a server, and keeping the cost to a reasonable minimum.
Looking at the product documentation for WMQ and WMB, the distributions of Linux supported are all 'advanced server' (ie. expensive) ones. I spoke to an IBM guy at a recent technical exchange seminar and he said (if I understood him correctly) that the way SuSE and RedHat limit the capacity of the workstation product compared to the server product is different - the RedHat approach is essentially by processor number so if it runs on RHEL AS, it'll run on RHEL WS (cheap) as the code is the same. Not so for SuSE.
Can anyone comment on this? I don't want to march off down the wrong route and waste time, energy and of course money!

I've been running FC3 in my laptop with the GA and beta versions of WMQ and Broker without a problem for several monoths now. Be advised this isn't a supported environment, but its been working fine as my "playpen"...

Forgive the Linux ignorance, but FC3? What that?
To explain my thinking a bit more, I know the environment I'm aiming for is unlikely to be supported, but I hope to end up with something that is as close as possible, hence I suspect the RedHat route might be favourite. Plus there is support for the OS itself which might be handy.
Anyone care to comment?

I use CentOS 4. This is equivalent to RedHat Enterprise 4 Haven't had any problems. It's not technically supported (because it's only BUILT from RedHat source), but it's the closest to a supported linux without shelling out dollars (or whatever your local currency may be).

glibc-2.3.4-2.9
I haven't had the chance to install message broker, but I have WMQ v6 running.

If you are set on RH that is fine BUT there is a SUSE VMWare image downlaodable for free( once you have registered on the site)
it is about 700 meg but i had it running on my VMMachine in minutes at it is at the level specified in IBMs pre reqs
I was also told in an email recently that IBM would not be supporting RH4 in the near future |
