All,

Ever since I saw this last week, I just can't stop drooling over it.

It is a complete contact admin (Network Attached Storage) device with 4 * 250GB hard drives and 1GB Ethernet (10/100/1000).
http://www.buffalotech.com/products/product-detail.php?productid=97&categoryid=19

You can setup it up as 4 * 250GB drives or 1TB spanned drive or 750GB under Raid 5.

A couple local retailers are carrying it and one has it for $1199 CDN ($940 USD).

I am seriously thinking of getting one this week. Hummm, a 1TB storage device for my small office, I like the sounds of it. Besides, why backup to tape or CD or DVD when you can backup to a disk array with Raid 5. Cool.

Anybody purchase one of these yet?

Of course, I won't even bring up the idea of how many MP3 files or movies can be stored on this device.

Regards,
Roger Lacroix

Hi,

Yes, I was a little too gung ho. Yes, I would continue with my DVD backups and offsite storage.

What can I say, I'm a geek or a kid in a candy store!!

I recently bought 3 refurnished servers:
- Sun SPARC with Solaris 9
- IBM AIX 5L with 5.3
- HPUX with 11.11

These will all have WMQ v6.0 installed on them. I've built a dual CPU x86 box for Linux (just missing RAM) and I need another dual CPU box for Windows 2003. Dell has some excellent specials right now for dual Xeon CPU servers for small business. So, I giving it some serious thought.

Regards,
Roger Lacroix

Hi,

Yes, my 'zSeries' is / will be at IBM. I have been so, so busy that I have not finished the sign up process. Last week I completed upgrades to all 5 products with MQAUSX having a major update. (The LDAP work put me way behind schedule.) Now I need to catch my breath and begin the next round of development / porting to z/OS and z/Linux for MQSSX and MQAUSX.

Somehow I need to finish my raised floor computer room. Right now it looks like a jungle. Plus I have a customer who is gently pushing me to port MQAUSX to iSeries. I've never worked on one, good lord, another OS to learn. That one is only on the wish list.

Regards,
Roger Lacroix

Are you referring to 'Windows Services for UNIX'? Because SFU allows users to run Unix scripts on Windows but I don't kow how this would help, say, my Solaris box.

Are you saying on a PC with SFU, make a mount point via SFU to the TeraStation, share the mount point then on Solaris mount the share? I think I would rather use the builtin ftp server.

Roger Lacroix

yes SFU includes an NFS Server for Windows, So can share drives or even directories using NFS from Solaris or AIX. It has helped me a lot on my small solaris machine (only 9GB) to put files on my Windows box (with a lot bigger disk) and be able to use them/untar/install etc , ofcourse this is test machine....

All,

Well on Friday I bought a Buffalo TeraStation 1TB. I set it up as Raid 5 and added a couple of shares. It was easy to setup and it is pretty quiet.

So far, I am pleased with it.

Roger Lacroix

What about some freehand hardware crash simulations? Pick up a hammer, a blowtorch and a magnet, and get to work!

Obviously, I already have hobbies - now you know what they are I did not mean to offend your Buffalo TeraStation, I apologize.
