I am trying to setup 3-tier scenario for my workflow system.

Can I use the DB2 on AS400 as my workflow runtime database(FMCRTDB).?

We are planning to buy the server boxes for the workflow and WAS. What things to consider in choosing the OS. As Jmac suggested, AIX is fine but what about the cost factor?. Is there any document from IBM to give suggestions on this part?

Our application is not scalable and only few processes will run on these systems in future.

Any suggestions?

It is my opinion that the answer to this one is NO. The Database must run on the same OS as the Workflow servers.

Kotha,

Just in case you are still trying to find this in documentation.

The following is from Best Practises Guide.

Page No. 7
Quote:

If the MQ Workflow servers run on the same node as the workflow database, this is
known as a 2-tier installation (clients are tier 1, servers are tier 2). You can move the
database to a separate physical box. This is called a 3-tier installation
(client/server/database). In a 3-tier installation, the database server must be on the same
platform as the workflow server.

Page No. 8
Quote:

Currently the database server for a 3-tier installation must be of the same platform as the
workflow server. This means that all servers in the system group must be on the same
platform. A Windows NT server and an AIX server cannot both be in the same system
group.

On the side notes, IBM support folks are not clear about the distinction between 2 tier and 3 tier. I *think* if the database is on a different box, it is 3 tier where as if its on the same box as WF, its 2 tier.
