are distribution lists available to JMS? if so how can I configure them? if there are no distribution lists available is there a way I can send the messages to multiple destinations without programatically taking care of it?

The answer is simple :
NO / may be...

Why even with a distribution list you are programatically taking care of it.
Now you just need to learn how to do it in JMS instead of base java API.

If you look at it the right way you just might fit a PUB/SUB model...
