Hi everyone.

I'm wondering if anyone out there has connected MQ Series Workflow to a Content Management system, specifically IBM DB2 Content Manager OnDemand. (But any Content Repository is equally applicable.)

I'm not familiar with MQWF, but a customer requirement has arisen that requires workflow, but the Content Management product doesn't support it natively. I've been tasked with developing a solution, but really don't know where to start.

The solution, as I understand it, would allow people to pick a document from the archive, and choose it to be submitted to a workflow process. The product already has Java APIs, (and I understand that MQWF does as well). Internally speaking, a 'Document ID' is returned by the repository, which could be used to recall the document through the APIs. This 'DocID' would be pushed along through the workflow, hopefully to successful completion.

I'm interested in hearing about any experiences connecting MQWF to document repositories, and some commentary on what it's like to work with the MQWF Java APIs.

There's probably a good opportunity for some subcontracting work, either for consulting services, or programming services (probably both). I'm located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and the customer is within an hour of the city.

Thanks in advance for your time, and please don't hesitate to contact me at mqseries@justinderrick.com if you'd like to talk offline.

-JD.

The concept of using DocumentID is the way to go and I have seen it working in few insurance companies.

If you want automatic triggering of process on document arrival, you can map different DocumentIDs to different MQWorkflow processes. For this you can use User Exits or write a deamon application which connects to both Content Management system and MQ Workflow using Java APIs.

If you have to link more than one documet in a workflow process, you have to design your Application and Application Groups carefuly so that there is a common indexing information in all documents through which they are linked.

If you want to do ICR/OCR, partial indexing at scanning stage, and want to release documents directly into Content Repository, you would need to think about Image Capture software that supports Content Manager OnDemand.

While desiging MQWorkflow container structure, keep in mind what indexing information you want to be available in MQ Workflow processe(Apart from DocumenID).

You can also pass document image through MQ Workflow Containers but that is not recommended.

If there are possibilities to integrate other systems, then the complexity should be adderessed at design stage.

Unless you have to use reporting/autoindexing features of "IBM DB2 Content Manager OnDemand" and your applications are dealing mostly with scanned images, "IBM DB2 Content Manager" would be better option. If its a document based low level workflow you can use its internal Document Routing features. Content Manager 8.3 has got graphical process designer and BPEL is supported.

There are lot of possibilities and problems you would face during development. Expect to see many posts from you soon

Hi,

guess what? Content Manager and MQWF already have a relation. From the CM 8.1 Technical Overview:

...IBM Content Manager also provides an EIP advanced workflow capability that allows more flexiblerouting functionality for enterprise-wide content. EIP advanced workflow supports parallel routing, datavariables and subprocesses, with the ability to incorporate content from Content Manager, ContentManager OnDemand and Content Manager ImagePlus repositories across all supported platforms intoa document-centric work process. The EIP advanced workflow service is seamlessly integrated with the IBM MQSeries Workflow engine and is surfaced in the eClient...
