We have about 10 MQ Servers running on various platforms. On one of our Win2K servers, we're running MQ 5.3 CSD1. I'd like to upgrade it to CSD9, but our admins here are worried about the upgrade causing issues with the MQ it connects to which is a Sun box.
I couldn't find any documentation stating that all communicating MQ Servers should have the same CSD levels. Anyone aware of any such issues?
Thanks... _________________ Leigh Kendall |

I can confirm that it doesn't cause any major problems.
I can also recommend that you get up to a more recent CSD as soon as possible, CSD01 is pretty flawed.
CSD09 is a good place to be, I have had very few problems with CSD05 and less at CSD07. _________________ Patrick Goodhart

Thanks Patrick for the quick response!
Anything more "official" than that, that can be used to verify your statements? Not that I don't believe you, but I think the folks I work with would be more comfortable if this came from IBM <g>. _________________ Leigh Kendall |

It should be a PMR-able issue if two different CSD levels of WMQ can't communicate. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

Well, you can go to IBM and check on their website under support...
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/integration/mqfamily/support/faqs/v5/v5faqtech.html
This is one of those things you are may have a hard time finding in a direct statement from IBM.
Look in the installation instruction documents and migration documents, I think they may have stated their policy there on CSD compatiblity.
Is there a (good) reason not to upgrade the Solaris machine to CSD09 too? _________________ Patrick Goodhart

Perhaps just the fear of upsetting something? I really don't know their reasons.
I'll google for CSD compatibilty issues. Thanks for the lead...

Program Maintenance Request or some such.
It's what IBM calls their bug/trouble tickets.
What I meant was, if you find a case where two different CSD levels of WMQ don't work together, then IBM should work with you to fix it. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

That fixes it, don't it?

Leigh, I doubt you will find anything that says this in writing. I am not being sarcastic in saying that it is almost a given, like MQ wont work on Server1 if Server1 is not plugged into the wall.
Old MQ versions work with new MQ versions. If you have a feature that exists on a newer version (like SSL on a channel), and you talk to an older version that doesn't support it, then it will fail, unless you drop the SSL.
As IBM releases new versions of MQ, they never take away functinality. They only add it. As long as you don't need the new features, one side can be older with no issues. _________________ Peter Potkay

Thanks everyone... I guess I'll have to prove this out in our development environments. Seeing is believing! _________________ Leigh Kendall |
