Hi All,

I am new to MQ. I have to perform Backup of MQ on AIX. While going through the MQSERIES BACKUP AND RECOVERY MANUAL, i found two types of backup: system, media backup. I am facing some problem in understanding these two. Can any one pls guide me. the questions i am having are

1. When do we take system backup and when do we take media backup?
2. Do we need to take both(media and system) backups?
3. Please suggest me some more resources/manuals for backup if there are any.

Thanks in Advance,
Raja

What are you trying to accomplish with a backup?

How many messages do you usually have sitting on queues?

Hi Jeff,

The tasks i intend to peform for the backup are

1. I have to take a backup of all queue managers.
2. have to take backup of /var/mqm and /usr/mqm directories.
3. channels should be checked if they are in sync.

When we take backup of a queue manager, should we take backup using
system backup or media backup?
(bcoz In the manual they have given how to take backup for both, but I am confused exactly which one we should take?).

As of now, I do not have an idea of exactly how many messages will be sitting on the queue. As I dont have prior experience, your inputs on these will be really helpful.

Thanks again,
Raja

To what purpose?

Just to make backups? Just to try it out? To protect against failure? To protect against malicious change? To protect against data loss? To provide redundancy?

Jeff,

Sorry for the confusion. My main intention is to to provide recovery in case of damaged object or if there is some problem with log files.

Thanks,
Raja

Make sure you read all about linear logging.
Make sure you have /var/mqm and your logging in 2 separate file systems.
Make sure your file systems are big enough (we use 4 GB for /var/mqm/) and another 4GB for the logging.

Enjoy

fjb,

Thanks Alot for the inputs.

I am going thru MQSERIES BACKUP AND RECOVERY manual and MQ SYS ADMIN MANUAL. Can you suggest me some resources/manuals/documentation on linear logging that you think would be useful.

Cheers,
Raja

There is a redbook I believe. You'll have to search for it, there's been some time since I looked at it.

Enjoy
