One Question that I have used is:

List all the possible statuses of a channel:
STARTING
BINDING
INACTIVE
INITIALIZING
RUNNING
STOPPING
RETRYING
PAUSED
STOPPED

If the interviewee seems relatively knowledgable and gets most of them I will usually go into detail about some of the statuses discussing exactly what is going on and when one would expect to see certan statuses and which ones would indicate that there is a problem.

I also ask questions about where one would look for information when one thinks there may be a problem with MQSeries.

Then I will ask the person about which problems stand out the most in thier experience. Try to get them to discuss in detail what was wrong and what actions were taken to resolve the issue.

PS: Most of the "MQ Problems" I deal with on a regular basis are not MQ related at all. Root Cause for these "MQ Problems" are almost always a problem with the Applications.

For Example: http://www.mqseries.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=19108

No offense, but you want a "senior MQ admin position", and you can't give examples of problems and how to resolve them. Oh boy........

I guess we'll see a lot of questions if he gets the job - no offense but being a jr admin 1st would give the opportunity to encounter and fix some of the common problems to gain experience.... just mho....

Well, Sometimes the position designation might be mis leading.. So thinking that it might not be a real sr. Admin position.. Here is what I would expect to ask..

1. Where are the error logs..
2. What do you do to back up a queue manager.
2. How do you recover..
3. How to monitor, what to monitor..
4. How to gather information related to transactions..
5. DRA etc..

Just my $0.02

I guess MQ is a product which any one can do the admin part , Just all we need is sdr rcvr , xmitq channel concept,
and Qalias, Qremote and Qlocal ,

Then they can learn client connections, Finally Cluster. Other thing is to know the Location of Logs,

I have seen people with zero MQ experience catching up MQ with less than a Month,
We all have IBM help support if there is something else,
I always think of moving away form MQ, but alas I had no luck

Well, I would say that it is a bit more complicated than that but it sure isn't Rocket Science.

I quite enjoy working with WMQSeries.

xxx,
I agree with csmith that it is not rocket science but u need to have a fair degree of knowledge to diagnose and resolve problems. The real test of a MQ administrator comes in if you have a P1 issue in hand and u are on the bridge trying to explain that it is not MQ which is wrong.... believe me, MQ is first to be blamed... But I enjoy working in the MQ domain... Dont you agree folks...

njoy,
~Om
