To use JMS in client rather than binding mode, you can use just the individual jar files as the client is designed to be a pure Java client. The bindings mode (where you run on an MQServer installation) use JNI to access the base MQI interface (i.e. MQCONN, MQOPEN, MQPUT etc).

However, rather than copying the client jar files manually to a directory, I would install the MA88 supportpac. That way you get an official installation.

Products such as WebSphere Application Server install just the client jar files, but then you don't get all the sample programs et al.

I wouldn't recommend installing the MA88 SupportPac. With WMQ 5.3, the java/jms classes are shipped with the product rather than through MA88. They aren't part of typical installation. You have to select Custom and then select them.

Would those JAR files be the ones mentioned in the 'Using Java' manual?

Thanks for the info guys!

bower5932 is quite correct. MA88 only supports upto the 5.2 functionality and it looks like it went out of support in May 2004.

You should not use the MA88 supportpac on a MQServer installation (I think the manual says you need to specifically uninstall it). The MQClient downloads now include the client-only bindings for the Java libraries, so I would try and use that before manually copying your own.
