For MQ Admins, in your opinion, would you believe it to be necessary to keep MQ Client CSD levels at the same level as MQ Server CSD levels?

If necessary, please explain...

Normally, I have been just updating the MQ Server CSDs, because I have had no problems with the MQ Clients..

Jeff, so you mean that you are only updating the MQ Server CSDs, correct?

We do the same, for CSD's i.e. just apply to server installs. Any new clients installations get the latest CSD at the time but otherwise clients only get upgraded when we do a bigger step e.g. 5.2 -> 5.3.

Cheers,
Vicky

Well when I first started at former workplace, they had just updated MQSeries Server v5.0, I didnt find out till a year later that some of the desktop apps were still v2 MQCLients, and they never had any issues so
they were never updated.

For Service Pack I generally don't upgrade the Clients unless there is a specific problem to be fixed.

Now when I upgraded from 5.2 to 5.3 I upgraded my Clients but from reading some of these responses I may skip that when we move to 5.4.

I have 5.1 clients talking to 5.3 CSD4 servers. It is not necessary to upgrade clients, unless the clients need new functionality introduced with a newer version, like SSL with 5.3.

Of course if those 5.1 or 5.2 clients crap out, I bet IBM's first response will be to upgrade before trying to help. But odds are if the app is not changing and has been working fine all these years, it will continue to do so.

If you are talking unsupported client -> supported server, IBM's response should be to look at a problem from the server side and only reject it if the problem is on the client side...

There may be reasons you have to upgrade, but we take great pains to ensure that old clients can talk in to new servers and maintain their functionality, and we have fixed cases where we havent.
