We are in the process of upgrading MQSeries from 5.2 to 5.3 on Solaris. The servers that are being upgraded also have MQSI 2.1 on them. While doing the upgrade my Unix support had to uninstall the current version of MQSeries. He got an error saying that uninstalling MQSI was a prerequisite. So he uninstalled both MQSeries and MQSI. He then installed the 5.3 version of MQSeries and reinstalled MQSI 2.1. What are the proper procedures for me to insure that I don't lose anything due to this uninstall/install?
I opened a PMR with IBM and I am being told to take a backup, export all of the message set and flow, delete the broker, uninstall, install, recreate the broker, recreate all of the execution groups, and import the message set and flows. There has to be a better way....
Any help is appreciated!
Ann.

While upgrading this on AIX (not sure about Solaris) we certainly did not have to uninstall WMQI. Check with your unix admin again & maybe ask IBM this question. I can't remember the exact steps but maybe the mqm user needed to be removed & recreated for the 5.3 upgrade, but there should be a way to proceed without uninstalling the whole of MQ.

Otherwise the method you have described for backing up and recreating the brokers might be your only option, but I would question if you need to do a complete uninstall of 5.2 - this would mean that you had to recreate all your qmgrs instead of effectively migrating them.

Cheers,
Vicky

If you do not delete /var/mqm directory after the 5.2 uninstall, you don't have to recreate the MQ objects after the migration that were already present.

Ann,

What vennela says then also implies that you do not need to uninstall WMQI. But you would obviously have brokers stopped.

Sorry if I was not clear in my answer.

There might me a dependency if there is WMQI on top of MQ. So, normally it wouldn't let you uninstall QM without uninstalling WMQI.

All I was trying to say was

IBM 3rd lvl told us to do it this way in Solaris:
1. saveqmgr
2. shutdown mq
3. delete the qmgrs before uninstalling
4. uninstlal 5.1
5. install 5.3
6. install csd05
7. create qmgr with same name
8. import saveqmgr objects

Lvl 1 an 2 told us we could leave /var/mqm alone and the pkadd of 5.3 would automatically udate the existing MQManager but lvl 3 said this was not the case.

I am looking for that original e-mail.

We always uninstall the old MQ before installing the new. Why? IBM support's last few responses when I had problems upgrading (without uninstalling 5.2) was "Uninstall 5.2, then install 5.3, and then call us if there is a prob."

It only take a few minutes extra, so I just always do it and go forward knowing I have a clean system.

I upgraded 8 systems with MQ and MQSI. I never had to touch MQSI while upgrading MQ. These were all Windows systems. I did shutdown MQSI completely before uninstalling MQ though.

On Solaris, I think that is just a warning message when you try and uninstall programA (5.2) if ProgramB(MQSI) needs it. As long as you put programA back (5.3), and don't start programB (MQSI) until you are done, I would think you are gonna be OK. Not 100$ sure though for Unix. Definitly not a prob for Windows2000.
